English Translation
Waki' told us, Umar ibn Dharr told us, from al-Ayzar ibn Jarwal al-Hadrami, from a man among them known as Abu Umayr, that he was a friend of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, and that Abdullah ibn Mas'ud visited him at his home but did not find him. He said: He asked permission to enter to his household and gave the greeting of peace, then asked for a drink. So they sent the servant girl to bring him a drink from the neighbors, and she delayed, so she, the wife, cursed her. Then Abdullah went out, and Abu Umayr came and said: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, it is not like you to be jealous - why did you not greet the household of your brother and sit and partake of the drink?" He said: "I did so; she sent the servant, and she delayed - either they did not have any, or they were reluctant to give what they had - so the servant delayed, and she cursed her. And I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: 'The curse goes to whoever it is directed at; if it finds a way to him, or finds a path into him, it settles on him; otherwise it says: \"O Lord, I was directed at so-and-so, but I found no way to him, and I found no path into him.\" Then it is said to it: \"Return whence you came.\"' So I feared that the servant girl might be excused, and the curse would return, and I would be its cause."
