English Translation
Ali ibn Asim narrated to us, Suhayl ibn Abi Salih narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn Yazid al-Sa'di. He said: People from my tribe ordered me to ask Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab about a spear that they sharpen and plant in the ground, and in the morning they find it has killed a hyena - would that count as proper slaughter? He said: So I sat with Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, and there was an old man with white hair and beard from the people of Sham with him. I asked him about it, and he said to me: "Do you really eat hyenas?" He said: I said, "I have never eaten one, but some people of my tribe do eat them." He said: "Eating them is not permissible." Then the old man said: "O Abdullah, shall I not tell you a hadith I heard from Abu al-Darda' who narrated it from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)?" He said: I said, "Yes." He said: "I heard Abu al-Darda' say: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prohibited every animal that snatches (its prey), every animal taken as plunder, every animal used as a target, and every predator with fangs.'" Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab said: "He spoke the truth."
