English Translation

Khalaf ibn al-Walid narrated to us: Abu Ja'far - meaning al-Razi - narrated to us, from Shurahbil, from Abu Rafi', the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: A sheep was given to him as a gift, and he put it in the pot. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came in and said, "What is this, O Abu Rafi'?" He said, "A sheep given to us as a gift, O Messenger of Allah, so I cooked it in the pot." He said, "Hand me the foreleg, O Abu Rafi'." So I handed him the foreleg. Then he said, "Hand me the other foreleg," so I handed him the other foreleg. Then he said, "Hand me another foreleg," and he said, "O Messenger of Allah, a sheep only has two forelegs." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him, "Had you kept silent, you would have kept handing me foreleg after foreleg, as long as you kept silent." Then he called for water, rinsed his mouth, and washed the tips of his fingers, then stood and prayed. Then he returned to them and found some cold meat with them, and ate it, then entered the mosque and prayed without touching water again.
