English Translation
Narrated to us by Hashim, who said: Abd al-Hamid narrated to us, who said: Shahr ibn Hawshab narrated to me, who said: I heard Umm Salamah relate that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to often say in his supplication: "O Allah, Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion." She said: "I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, do hearts indeed turn about?'" He said: "Yes. There is none of Allah's creation among the children of Adam, any human being, but that his heart is between two fingers of the fingers of Allah. If Allah, Mighty and Sublime, wills, He makes it steadfast, and if Allah wills, He causes it to deviate. So we ask Allah, our Lord, not to let our hearts deviate after He has guided us, and we ask Him to grant us mercy from Himself, for He is the Bestower." She said: "I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, will you not teach me a supplication that I may make for myself?'" He said: "Yes, say: 'O Allah, Lord of Muhammad the Prophet, forgive me my sin, remove the rage of my heart, and protect me from the misleading trials for as long as You keep us alive.'"
