حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قَالَتْ جَاءَتْ أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلْ لَكَ فِي أُخْتِي قَالَ فَأَصْنَعُ بِهَا مَاذَا قَالَتْ تَزَوَّجُهَا فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَتُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَتْ نَعَمْ لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَقُّ مَنْ شَرِكَنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّهَا لَا تَحِلُّ لِي قَالَتْ فَوَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ تَخْطُبُ دُرَّةَ ابْنَةَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَوْ كَانَتْ تَحِلُّ لِي لَمَا تَزَوَّجْتُهَا قَدْ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَاهَا ثُوَيْبَةُ مَوْلَاةُ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ فَلَا تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ وَلَا بَنَاتِكُنَّ حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعْدٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أُمِّ حَبِيبَةَ أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ هَلْ لَكَ فِي أُخْتِي فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أُمِّ حَبِيبَةَ بِنْتِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ قَالَتْ قُلْتُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَلَا تَزَوَّجُ أُخْتِي فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ أَنَّ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ أَخْبَرَتْهُ أَنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ ابْنَةَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ أَخْبَرَتْهَا أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ انْكِحْ أُخْتِي فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ قَالَ أَبِي وَوَافَقَهُ ابْنُ أَخِي الزُّهْرِيِّ وَقَالَ عُقَيْلٌ إِنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ قَالَتْ.
English Translation
Abu Mu'awiyah told us, Hisham b. 'Urwah told us, from his father, from Zaynab bint Abi Salamah, from Umm Salamah, who said: Umm Habibah came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, would you consider my sister?" He said, "What would I do with her?" She said, "Marry her." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her, "Would you like that?" She said, "Yes; I am not the only one entitled to you, and the one most deserving to share with me in something good is my sister." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "She is not lawful for me." She said, "But, by Allah, I have heard that you are seeking to marry Durrah, the daughter of Umm Salamah, daughter of Abu Salamah." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Even if she were lawful for me, I would not marry her - Thuwaybah, the freedwoman of Banu Hashim, nursed both me and her father. So do not offer me your sisters or your daughters." Yunus b. Muhammad told us, he said Layth - meaning Ibn Sa'd - told us, from Hisham b. 'Urwah, from his father, from Zaynab bint Abi Salamah, from Umm Habibah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came in to me and I said, "Would you consider my sister?" - and he related the hadith. Ya'qub told us, his father told us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said Hisham b. 'Urwah told us, from his father, from Zaynab bint Abi Salamah, from Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan, who said: I said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), "Will you not marry my sister?" - and he related the hadith. Abu al-Yaman told us, he said Shu'ayb informed us, from al-Zuhri, who said 'Urwah b. al-Zubayr informed me that Zaynab bint Abi Salamah informed him that Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan informed her that she said, "O Messenger of Allah, marry my sister" - and he related the hadith. My father said: Ibn Akhi al-Zuhri agreed with him, and 'Uqayl said that it was Umm Habibah who said it.
