English Translation
A group of Jews came to the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) one day and said: 'O Abu al-Qasim, tell us about certain matters we will ask you about — none knows them except a prophet.' He said: 'Ask me whatever you wish, but give me the covenant of Allah and the pledge that Ya'qub (peace be upon him) took from his sons — that if I inform you of something and you recognize it as truth, you will follow me in Islam.' They said: 'That is for you.' He said: 'Ask me whatever you wish.' They said: 'Tell us about four matters: Tell us what food Israel prohibited upon himself before the Torah was revealed; tell us about the fluid of the woman and the fluid of the man — how a male comes from it; tell us how this unlettered Prophet is in sleep; and who is his guardian angel?' He said: 'Upon you is the covenant of Allah and His pledge that if I inform you, you will follow me.' They gave him whatever covenant and pledge he wanted. He said: 'I ask you by the One who revealed the Torah to Musa (peace be upon him) — do you know that Israel (Ya'qub, peace be upon him) became severely ill and his sickness prolonged, so he made a vow to Allah that if Allah cured him from his illness, he would forbid the most beloved drink and the most beloved food to him? The most beloved food to him was camel meat and the most beloved drink was camel milk.' They said: 'O Allah, yes.' He said: 'O Allah, bear witness against them.' He said: 'I ask you by Allah, the One besides whom there is no deity, who revealed the Torah to Musa — do you know that the man's fluid is white and thick, and the woman's fluid is yellow and thin, and whichever prevails determines the child and the resemblance by Allah's permission? If the man's fluid prevails over the woman's, it is a male by Allah's permission, and if the woman's fluid prevails over the man's, it is a female by Allah's permission.' They said: 'O Allah, yes.' He said: 'O Allah, bear witness against them.' He said: 'I ask you by the One who revealed the Torah to Musa — do you know that this unlettered Prophet's eyes sleep but his heart does not sleep?' They said: 'O Allah, yes.' He said: 'O Allah, bear witness.' They said: 'Now tell us who is your guardian angel, and at this point we will either join you or part from you.' He said: 'My guardian is Jibril (peace be upon him), and Allah has never sent a prophet except that he (Jibril) was his guardian.' They said: 'At this point we part from you. Had your guardian been any other angel, we would have followed you and believed you.' He said: 'What prevents you from believing him?' They said: 'He is our enemy.' At that, Allah the Almighty said: 'Say: Whoever is an enemy to Jibril — it is he who has brought it (the Quran) down upon your heart by permission of Allah...' to His saying: '...the Book of Allah behind their backs as if they did not know' (2:97-101). At that they 'returned with anger upon anger' (2:90).
