English Translation
Sulayman ibn Dawud told us: Abd al-Rahman informed us, from Hisham ibn Urwah, who said: My father informed me that A'ishah said to him: "O son of my sister, I witnessed something astonishing about the Messenger of Allah's (peace and blessings be upon him) reverence for his uncle. That was because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to be seized by a pain in the flank that would afflict him severely, and we would say: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has been afflicted by a pain of the kidney vein' - we did not know how to say 'the flank.' Then one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was seized by it, and it grew so severe that he lost consciousness, and we feared for him, and the people rushed to him in alarm. We thought he had pleurisy, so we forced medicine into the side of his mouth. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was relieved and regained consciousness, and realized that he had been given the medicine forcibly and found the trace of it. He said: 'Did you think that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, had empowered it over me? Allah would never empower it over me. By the One in whose hand is my soul, no one shall remain in the house without being given the medicine forcibly, except my uncle.' So I saw them administering it to them, man by man." A'ishah said: "And whoever was in the house that day" - mentioning their merit - "the men were all given the medicine forcibly, and it reached the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and they were given it one woman after another, until it reached a woman among us" - Ibn Abi al-Zinad said: "I do not know her except as Maymunah," and he said some people said it was Umm Salamah - "she said, 'By Allah, I am fasting.' So we said, 'How ill you have thought of us, that we would leave you exempt, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had sworn that everyone would be given it.' So we administered it to her forcibly, by Allah, O son of my sister, while she was indeed fasting."
