English Translation

Mu'ammal told us: Hammad told us: Ishaq ibn Suwayd told us, from Yahya ibn Ya'mar, from A'ishah, who said: the wife of Uthman ibn Maz'un used to apply henna and perfume, then she gave that up. She came in to me, and I said to her: "Are you one whose husband is present, or one whose husband is absent?" She said: "Present, yet as if absent." I said to her: "What is the matter with you?" She said: "Uthman wants neither this world nor women." A'ishah said: the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then came in to me, and I informed him of that. He met Uthman and said: "O Uthman, do you believe in what we believe in?" He said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Then you have an example in us, concerning what applies to you." Mu'ammal told us: Hammad told us: Ishaq ibn Suwayd told us, from Abu Fakhitah, from A'ishah, with the like of it, adding in it that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Uthman: "Do you believe in what we believe in?" He said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Then do as we do."
