English Translation
Abd al-A'la told us, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from Ubaydullah b. Abdullah, from Aishah, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fell ill in the house of Maymunah, he asked permission of his wives to be nursed in my house, and they gave him permission. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out, leaning on al-Abbas and on another man, his feet dragging on the ground — and Ubaydullah said: Ibn Abbas said, "Do you know who that man was? It was Ali b. Abi Talib, but Aishah does not feel at ease naming him." Al-Zuhri said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), while in Maymunah's house, said to Abdullah b. Zam'ah, "Tell the people to pray." He met Umar b. al-Khattab and said, "O Umar, lead the people in prayer." So he led them, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard his voice and recognized it, for he had a loud voice, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Is that not the voice of Umar?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and the believers refuse that — tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Aishah said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr is a tender-hearted man who cannot control his tears; when he recites the Qur'an he weeps." He said, "You only said that out of dislike that people would attribute ill omen to Abu Bakr for being the first to stand in the place of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." He said, "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." She repeated her objection to him, and he said, "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer — you are indeed like the female companions of Yusuf."
