حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنْ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ قُسَيْطٍ عَنِ الْقَعْقَاعِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي حَدْرَدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي حَدْرَدٍ قَالَ بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى إِضَمَ فَخَرَجْتُ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فِيهِمْ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ الْحَارِثُ بْنُ رِبْعِيٍّ وَمُحَلَّمُ بْنُ جَثَّامَةَ بْنِ قَيْسٍ فَخَرَجْنَا حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا بِبَطْنِ إِضَمَ مَرَّ بِنَا عَامِرٌ الْأَشْجَعِيُّ عَلَى قَعُودٍ لَهُ مُتَيْعٌ وَوَطْبٌ مِنْ لَبَنٍ فَلَمَّا مَرَّ بِنَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْنَا فَأَمْسَكْنَا عَنْهُ وَحَمَلَ عَلَيْهِ مُحَلَّمُ بْنُ جَثَّامَةَ فَقَتَلَهُ بِشَيْءٍ كَانَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهُ وَأَخَذَ بَعِيرَهُ وَمُتَيْعَهُ فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَخْبَرْنَاهُ الْخَبَرَ نَزَلَ فِينَا الْقُرْآنُ { يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا ضَرَبْتُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَتَبَيَّنُوا وَلَا تَقُولُوا لِمَنْ أَلْقَى إِلَيْكُمْ السَّلَامَ لَسْتَ مُؤْمِنًا تَبْتَغُونَ عَرَضَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا فَعِنْدَ اللَّهِ مَغَانِمُ كَثِيرَةٌ كَذَلِكَ كُنْتُمْ مِنْ قَبْلُ فَمَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَتَبَيَّنُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرًا }.
English Translation
Ya'qub narrated to us: my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq: Yazid bin Abdullah bin Qusayt narrated to me, from al-Qa'qa' bin Abdullah bin Abi Hadrad, from his father Abdullah bin Abi Hadrad, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent us towards Idam. I set out among a group of Muslims, among them Abu Qatadah al-Harith bin Rib'i and Muhallam bin Jaththamah bin Qays. We went until, when we were at the valley of Idam, Amir al-Ashja'i passed by us on a riding-camel of his, with a small water-skin and a skin of milk. When he passed by us he greeted us with the peace-greeting; we held back from him, but Muhallam bin Jaththamah attacked him and killed him because of something between them, and took his camel and his little provisions. When we came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and told him what had happened, the Qur'an was revealed concerning us: "O you who believe, when you go forth in the way of Allah, verify, and do not say to one who offers you a greeting of peace, 'You are not a believer,' seeking the goods of the worldly life — for with Allah are abundant spoils. Such were you before, and Allah conferred His favor upon you; therefore verify — indeed Allah is well aware of what you do."
