English Translation
Abd al-Razzaq told us: Ma'mar told us, from al-Zuhri, from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, from his father, who said: When death approached Abu Talib, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon him, and with him were Abu Jahl and Abdullah ibn Abi Umayyah. He said: "O uncle, say 'there is no god but Allah,' a word by which I may argue on your behalf before Allah, Mighty and Sublime." Abu Jahl and Abdullah ibn Abi Umayyah said: "O Abu Talib, do you turn away from the religion of Abd al-Muttalib?" He said: They continued speaking to him until the last thing he said to them was that he remained on the religion of Abd al-Muttalib. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will surely ask forgiveness for you as long as I am not forbidden concerning you." Then there was revealed: {It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they be near of kin, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of the Blazing Fire}. He said: And there was revealed concerning him: {Indeed, you do not guide whom you love}.
