حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا ثَابِتٌ يَعْنِي أَبَا زَيْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ أَفْلَحَ مَوْلَى أَبِي أَيُّوبَ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَزَلَ عَلَيْهِ فَنَزَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَسْفَلَ وَأَبُو أَيُّوبَ فِي الْعُلُوِّ فَانْتَبَهَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ فَقَالَ نَمْشِي فَوْقَ رَأْسِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَتَحَوَّلَ فَبَاتُوا فِي جَانِبٍ فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَ ذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ السُّفْلُ أَرْفَقُ بِي فَقَالَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ لَا أَعْلُو سَقِيفَةً أَنْتَ تَحْتَهَا فَتَحَوَّلَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ فِي السُّفْلِ وَالنَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْعُلُوِّ فَكَانَ يَصْنَعُ طَعَامَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَيَبْعَثُ إِلَيْهِ فَإِذَا رُدَّ إِلَيْهِ سَأَلَ عَنْ مَوْضِعِ أَصَابِعِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَيَتَّبِعُ أَثَرَ أَصَابِعِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَيَأْكُلُ مِنْ حَيْثُ أَثَرِ أَصَابِعِهِ فَصَنَعَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ طَعَامًا فِيهِ ثُومٌ فَأَرْسَلَ بِهِ إِلَيْهِ فَسَأَلَ عَنْ مَوْضِعِ أَثَرِ أَصَابِعِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقِيلَ لَمْ يَأْكُلْ فَصَعِدَ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ أَحَرَامٌ هُوَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَكْرَهُهُ قَالَ فَإِنِّي أَكْرَهُ مَا تَكْرَهُ أَوْ مَا كَرِهْتَهُ وَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُؤْتَى.
English Translation
Abu Sa'id, freedman of the Banu Hashim, narrated to us, Thabit — that is, Abu Zayd — narrated to us, Asim narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn al-Harith, from Aflah, freedman of Abu Ayyub, from Abu Ayyub: that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stayed with him; the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stayed on the lower floor while Abu Ayyub was on the upper floor. One night Abu Ayyub woke and said: We are walking above the head of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! So he moved, and they spent the night to one side. When morning came, he mentioned that to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The lower floor is more convenient for me. Abu Ayyub said: I will not live above a roof beneath which you are. So Abu Ayyub moved to the lower floor, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, took the upper floor. He used to prepare food for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and send it to him; when it was returned to him, he would ask about the place touched by the Prophet's fingers, peace and blessings be upon him, and follow the trace of his fingers, eating from where his fingers had touched. One day he prepared food containing garlic and sent it to him; he asked about the place touched by the Prophet's fingers, peace and blessings be upon him, and was told he had not eaten from it. So he went up to him and said: Is it forbidden? The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I dislike it. He said: Then I dislike what you dislike, or what you have disliked. And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to be visited.
