English Translation
It was narrated to us by Yazid, who said: It was narrated to us by Abu Malik, from Rib'i ibn Hirash, from Hudhayfah, that he came from 'Umar's presence and said: When we sat with him, he asked the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: 'Which of you heard the saying of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, concerning tribulations?' They said: 'We heard it.' He said: 'Perhaps you mean the tribulation of a man in his family and his wealth?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'I am not asking about that — that one is expiated by prayer, fasting and charity — but which of you heard the saying of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, concerning the tribulations that surge like the waves of the sea?' He said: So the people fell silent, and I thought that he meant me. I said: 'I am the one.' He said: 'You — may your father belong to Allah.' I said: 'Tribulations will be presented to hearts like a woven mat, straw by straw; whichever heart rejects them, a white mark will be imprinted in it, and whichever heart welcomes them, a black mark will be imprinted in it, until hearts become of two kinds: one white like a smooth stone, which no tribulation will harm as long as the heavens and earth remain; and the other black and dust-coloured like an overturned vessel' — and he tilted his palm — 'which recognizes neither good nor rejects evil, except what it has been imbued with of its own desire.' And I told him that between him and it there was a closed door, which was about to be broken open. 'Umar said: 'Broken? No father to you!' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'If it were opened, perhaps it could be closed again.' I said: 'No, rather broken.' And I told him that that door was a man who would be killed or die — a true report, not full of falsehoods.'
