حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ وَأَبُو نُعَيْمٍ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ جُمَيْعٍ قَالَ أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ عَنْ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ مِثْلَ جُمَيْعٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الطُّفَيْلِ قَالَ كَانَ بَيْنَ حُذَيْفَةَ وَبَيْنَ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعَقَبَةِ مَا يَكُونُ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ فَقَالَ أَنْشُدُكَ اللَّهَ كَمْ كَانَ أَصْحَابُ الْعَقَبَةِ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْقَوْمُ أَخْبِرْهُ إِذْ سَأَلَكَ قَالَ إِنْ كُنَّا نُخْبَرُ أَنَّهُمْ أَرْبَعَةَ عَشَرَ وَقَالَ أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ كُنَّا نُخْبَرُ أَنَّهُمْ أَرْبَعَةَ عَشَرَ قَالَ فَإِنْ كُنْتَ مِنْهُمْ وَقَالَ أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ فِيهِمْ فَقَدْ كَانَ الْقَوْمُ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ وَأَشْهَدُ بِاللَّهِ أَنَّ اثْنَيْ عَشَرَ مِنْهُمْ حَرْبٌ لِلَّهِ وَلِرَسُولِهِ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَيَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْأَشْهَادُ قَالَ أَبُو أَحْمَدَ الْأَشْهَادُ وَعَدَّنَا ثَلَاثَةً قَالُوا مَا سَمِعْنَا مُنَادِيَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَا عَلِمْنَا مَا أَرَادَ الْقَوْمُ قَالَ أَبُو أَحْمَدَ فِي حَدِيثِهِ وَقَدْ كَانَ فِي حَرَّةٍ فَمَشَى فَقَالَ لِلنَّاسِ إِنَّ الْمَاءَ قَلِيلٌ فَلَا يَسْبِقْنِي إِلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ فَوَجَدَ قَوْمًا قَدْ سَبَقُوهُ فَلَعَنَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ.
English Translation
Muhammad b. 'Abdullah b. al-Zubayr and Abu Nu'aym told us, they said: al-Walid - that is, Ibn Jumay' - told us; Abu Nu'aym said: from Abu al-Tufayl, like Jumay' - Abu al-Tufayl told us, he said: Between Hudhayfah and a man of the people of al-'Aqabah there was a dispute such as occurs between people, and he said: "I adjure you by God, how many were the people of al-'Aqabah?" The people said to him: "Tell him, since he has asked you." He said: "We used to be told they were fourteen." Abu Nu'aym said: the man said: "We used to be told they were fourteen." He said: "If you were among them" - Abu Nu'aym said: "among them" - "the group was in fact fifteen, and I bear witness by God that twelve of them were at war with God and His Messenger in the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses will stand." Abu Ahmad said: "the witnesses" - and he counted us as three - "who said: 'We did not hear the caller of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), and we did not know what the people intended.'" Abu Ahmad said in his hadith: And he had been at a lava-field, so he walked and said to the people: "The water is scarce, so let none of you get ahead of me to it." Then he found that some people had gotten ahead of him, so he cursed them that day.
