English Translation
Zayd ibn al-Hubab told us: al-Husayn ibn Waqid told me: Abdullah ibn Buraydah told me: my father Buraydah told me, who said: We laid siege to Khaybar. Abu Bakr took the banner and went forth, but no victory was granted through him; he took it again the next day and went out, but returned without victory being granted through him, and the people suffered hardship and distress that day. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Tomorrow I shall hand the banner to a man whom Allah and His Messenger love, and who loves Allah and His Messenger; he will not return until victory is granted through him. We spent the night with our souls at ease that victory would come the next day. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, arose the next morning, he prayed the dawn prayer, then stood up and called for the banner while the people were in their ranks. He called Ali, who had an eye ailment, spat in his eyes, and handed him the banner, and victory was granted through him. Buraydah said: I was among those who craned their necks to see this happen.
