حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ عَنْ زَيْدٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَّامٍ عَنْ أَبِي مَالِكٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَقُولُ الطُّهْرُ شَطْرُ الْإِيمَانِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ يَمْلَأُ الْمِيزَانَ وَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ تَمْلَأُ مَا بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَالصَّلَاةُ نُورٌ وَالصَّدَقَةُ بُرْهَانٌ وَالصَّبْرُ ضِيَاءٌ وَالْقُرْآنُ حُجَّةٌ لَكَ أَوْ عَلَيْكَ كُلُّ النَّاسِ يَغْدُو فَبَائِعٌ نَفْسَهُ فَمُعْتِقُهَا أَوْ مُوبِقُهَا حَدَّثَنَا سُرَيْجُ بْنُ النُّعْمَانِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ يَحْيَى بْنُ مَيْمُونٍ يَعْنِي الْعَطَّارَ حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ حَدَّثَنِي زَيْدُ بْنُ سَلَّامٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَّامٍ حَدَّثَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الطُّهُورُ شَطْرُ الْإِيمَانِ فَذَكَرَ مِثْلَهُ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ الصَّلَاةُ بُرْهَانٌ وَالصَّدَقَةُ نُورٌ.
English Translation
'Affan narrated to us: Aban narrated to us: Yahya ibn Abi Kathir narrated to me, from Zayd, from Abu Sallam, from Abu Malik al-Ash'ari, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to say: 'Purity is half of faith, and "al-hamdu lillah" fills the scale, and "Subhan Allah" and "al-hamdu lillah" and "Allahu Akbar" fill what is between the heaven and the earth, and prayer is a light, charity is a proof, patience is a radiance, and the Qur'an is an argument for you or against you. Every person goes out in the morning and sells himself, either freeing it or destroying it.' Surayj ibn al-Nu'man narrated to us: Abu Ishaq Yahya ibn Maymun — meaning al-'Attar — narrated to us: Yahya ibn Abi Kathir narrated to me: Zayd ibn Sallam narrated to me, from Abu Sallam, that 'Abd al-Rahman al-Ash'ari narrated to him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'Purification is half of faith' — and he mentioned the like of it, except that he said: 'prayer is a proof and charity is a light.'
