حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ عَنْ ثَوْبَانَ قَالَ لَمَّا أُنْزِلَتْ { الَّذِينَ يَكْنِزُونَ الذَّهَبَ وَالْفِضَّةَ وَلَا يُنْفِقُونَهَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ } قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي بَعْضِ أَسْفَارِهِ فَقَالَ بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِهِ قَدْ نَزَلَ فِي الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ مَا نَزَلَ فَلَوْ أَنَّا عَلِمْنَا أَيُّ الْمَالِ خَيْرٌ اتَّخَذْنَاهُ فَقَالَ أَفْضَلُهُ لِسَانًا ذَاكِرًا وَقَلْبًا شَاكِرًا وَزَوْجَةً مُؤْمِنَةً تُعِينُهُ عَلَى إِيمَانِهِ.
English Translation
'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, from Isra'il, from Mansur, from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja'd, from Thawban, who said: When the verse was revealed: "Those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the cause of Allah" [9:34], he said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on one of his journeys, and some of his companions said: "The revelation about gold and silver has come down. If only we knew which wealth is best, we would acquire it." So he said: "The best of it is a tongue that remembers Allah, a heart that is grateful, and a believing wife who helps him in his faith."
