English Translation

Abdullah told us, my father told me, Ahmad ibn Abd al-Malik al-Harrani told us, Ubaydullah — meaning Ibn Amr — told us, from Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from Mu'adh ibn Jabal, who said: Two men among the Children of Israel, in the time of Moses, peace be upon him, traced their lineage — one a Muslim and the other a polytheist. The polytheist traced his lineage, saying, "I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so," until he reached nine forefathers. Then he said to his companion, "Trace your lineage, you who have no mother!" He said, "I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so, and I disown whatever is beyond that." So Moses, peace be upon him, called the people together and gathered them, then said, "Judgment has been passed between the two of you. As for the one who traced his lineage to nine forefathers, you are above them, the tenth, in the Fire. And as for the one who traced his lineage to only his two parents, you are a man among the people of Islam."
