حَدَّثَنَا مَكِّيٌّ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدٍ عَنْ أَبِي النَّضْرِ عَنْ بُسْرِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ قَالَ احْتَجَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ حُجْرَةً وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ اللَّيْلِ فَيُصَلِّي فِيهَا فَصَلَّوْا مَعَهُ بِصَلَاتِهِ يَعْنِي رِجَالًا وَكَانُوا يَأْتُونَهُ كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ لَيْلَةٌ مِنْ اللَّيَالِي لَمْ يَخْرُجْ إِلَيْهِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَتَنَحْنَحُوا وَرَفَعُوا أَصْوَاتَهُمْ قَالَ فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُغْضَبًا قَالَ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ مَا زَالَ بِكُمْ صَنِيعُكُمْ حَتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنْ سَيُكْتَبُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَعَلَيْكُمْ بِالصَّلَاةِ فِي بُيُوتِكُمْ فَإِنَّ خَيْرَ صَلَاةِ الْمَرْءِ فِي بَيْتِهِ إِلَّا الصَّلَاةَ الْمَكْتُوبَةَ.
English Translation
Makki told us: Abdullah ibn Sa'id ibn Abi Hind told us, from Abu al-Nadr, from Busr ibn Sa'id, from Zayd ibn Thabit al-Ansari, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, partitioned off a small chamber in the mosque, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to go out at night and pray in it. So men prayed along with him following his prayer, and they used to come to him every night, until one night the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did not come out to them. They cleared their throats and raised their voices, so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came out to them angry and said to them: 'O people, your conduct continued until I thought it would be made obligatory upon you. So observe prayer in your homes, for the best prayer of a person is in his house, except for the obligatory prayer.'
