English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us: Shu'ba told us, from Qatada, from Yunus ibn Jubayr, from Kathir ibn al-Salt, who said: Ibn al-As and Zayd ibn Thabit were writing out copies of the Qur'an, and they passed by this verse, and Zayd said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: 'The old man and the old woman, when they commit adultery, stone them absolutely.'" Umar said: "When this was revealed, I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: 'Write it down for me.'" Shu'ba said: It seems he disliked that. Umar said: "Do you not see that the old man, if he is not married, is [only] flogged, and the young man, if he commits adultery and is married, is stoned?"
