English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us: Shu'bah narrated to us from Simak ibn Harb, who said: I heard Jabir ibn Samurah say: A short, disheveled, muscular man wearing a waist-wrap was brought to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, having committed adultery. He turned him away twice, then ordered him stoned, and he was stoned. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Every time we go out as fighters in the path of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, one of you stays behind, bleating like a billy-goat in rut, giving one of them a small measure of milk. Allah, Blessed and Exalted, does not give me power over any of them but that I make him an example, or punish him exemplarily." He said: Sa'id ibn Jubayr narrated it to me and said: "He turned him away four times." Hajjaj narrated to us: Shu'bah narrated to us from Simak ibn Harb, who said: I heard Jabir ibn Samurah say: I saw that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was brought Ma'iz ibn Malik - and he related the same meaning, except that he said "one of them stays behind bleating like the bleating of a billy-goat." He said: I related it to al-Hakam, and it pleased him, and he said to me, "What is al-kuthbah?" So I asked Simak about al-kuthbah, and he said: "A small amount of milk."
