حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا الْمُبَارَكُ بْنُ فَضَالَةَ حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ أَخْبَرَنِي شَيْخٌ مَنْ بَنِي سَلِيطٍ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُكَلِّمُهُ فِي سَبْيٍ أُصِيبَ لَنَا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَإِذَا هُوَ يُحَدِّثُ الْقَوْمَ وَحَلْقَةٌ قَدْ أَطَافَتْ بِهِ فَإِذَا هُوَ قَاعِدٌ عَلَيْهِ إِزَارُ قِطْرٍ لَهُ غَلِيظٌ أَوَّلُ شَيْءٍ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْهُ يَقُولُ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ بِيَدِهِ هَكَذَا وَأَشَارَ الْمُبَارَكُ بِإِصْبَعِهِ السَّبَّابَةِ الْمُسْلِمُ أَخُو الْمُسْلِمِ لَا يَظْلِمُهُ وَلَا يَخْذُلُهُ التَّقْوَى هَاهُنَا التَّقْوَى هَاهُنَا أَيْ فِي الْقَلْبِ.
English Translation
A sheikh from Banu Sulayt said: I came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) to speak to him about captives taken from us during the pre-Islamic period. He was speaking to the people with a circle gathered around him, sitting with a thick striped waist-wrapper. The first thing I heard him say, gesturing with his index finger, was: 'The Muslim is the brother of the Muslim; he does not wrong him, nor does he forsake him. Piety is here' - and he pointed to his chest.
