حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ سَعِيدِ بْنِ إِيَاسٍ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ عَبَايَةَ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبِي وَأَنَا أَقْرَأُ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ إِيَّاكَ وَالْحَدَثَ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ فَإِنِّي صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَخَلْفَ أَبِى بَكْرٍ وَخَلْفَ عُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُمْ فَكَانُوا لَا يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِبِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ وَلَمْ أَرَ رَجُلًا قَطُّ أَبْغَضَ إِلَيْهِ الْحَدَثُ مِنْهُ.
English Translation
Affan told us, Wuhayb told us, from Abu Mas'ud al-Jurayri, Sa'id ibn Iyas, from Qays ibn Abayah, Ibn Abdullah ibn Mughaffal told me, who said: My father said, while I was reciting "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds" - when he had finished, he said: "O my son, beware of innovation in Islam, for I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and behind Abu Bakr, and behind Umar and Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them, and they never used to begin the recitation aloud with 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.' And I have never seen a man to whom innovation was more hateful than him."
