English Translation
'Abd al-Rahman b. Mahdi narrated to us, from Hammad b. Salama, from 'Ali b. Zayd, from 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abi Bakra, from his father, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: "Gabriel and Michael, peace be upon them, came to me. Gabriel, peace be upon him, said: 'Recite the Qur'an according to one mode of reading.' Michael said: 'Ask him for more.' He said: 'Recite it according to seven modes, all of them sufficient and satisfying, so long as a verse of mercy is not concluded with a verse of punishment, or a verse of punishment with a verse of mercy.'"
