English Translation
Yahya narrated to us, from Awf, Abu Raja narrated to us, Imran ibn Husayn narrated to me, who said: We were traveling with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and we traveled through the night. When it was the last part of the night, we fell into a deep sleep — and no sleep is sweeter to a traveler than that. Nothing woke us except the heat of the sun. The first to wake up was so-and-so, then so-and-so — Abu Raja used to name them, but Awf forgot — then Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was the fourth. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) slept, we would not wake him until he woke up himself, because we did not know what might happen to him or be revealed to him in his sleep. When Umar woke up and saw what had happened to the people — and he was a man with a strong, loud voice — he said 'Allahu Akbar' and kept raising his voice with the takbir until the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) woke up from his voice. When he woke up, they complained about what had happened. He said: 'No harm — or it does no harm. Move on.' So he moved on, traveled a short distance, then dismounted. He called for water for ablution and performed ablution. The call to prayer was given and he led the people in prayer. When he finished his prayer, there was a man sitting apart who had not prayed with the group. He said: 'What prevented you, O so-and-so, from praying with the group?' The man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I was in a state of major ritual impurity and there was no water.' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Use clean earth (tayammum), for it suffices you.' Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) continued traveling, and the people complained to him of thirst. He dismounted and called so-and-so — Abu Raja used to name him, but Awf forgot — and called Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and said: 'Go and search for water for us.' They set off and met a woman between two waterskins — or two leather containers — of water on her camel. They said to her: 'Where is water?' She said: 'The last time I saw water was yesterday at this hour, and our menfolk have gone away.' They said: 'Come with us then.' She said: 'Where to?' They said: 'To the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).' She said: 'The one they call the Sabian?' They said: 'He is the one you mean, so come.' They brought her to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and told him the story. They helped her down from her camel. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) called for a vessel and poured water from the mouths of the two containers into it, then tied up their mouths and opened the spouts. The people were called: 'Come and drink and fill your vessels!' Everyone who wished drank, and everyone who wished filled their vessels. The last thing he did was give the man who was in a state of impurity a vessel of water and said: 'Go and pour it over yourself.' She stood watching what was being done with her water. By Allah, when he stopped, it seemed to us that the containers were fuller than when he started. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Collect food for her.' They gathered dates, flour, and dried barley until they collected a large amount of food. They put it in a cloth, placed her on her camel, and put the cloth in front of her. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to her: 'You know, by Allah, we have not diminished any of your water. Rather, it is Allah, Mighty and Majestic, who gave us drink.' She went back to her people, having been delayed. They said: 'What kept you, O so-and-so?' She said: 'Something amazing! Two men met me and took me to this man they call the Sabian. He did such-and-such with my water. By Allah, he is either the greatest sorcerer between here and here' — she said with her middle and index fingers, raising them toward the sky, meaning between heaven and earth — 'or he is truly the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).' After that, the Muslims would raid the polytheists around her area but would leave untouched the settlement where she lived. One day she said to her people: 'I think these people are leaving you alone deliberately. Do you have any interest in Islam?' They obeyed her and entered Islam.
