English Translation
Abd al-Samad narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, Thabit narrated to us, from Kinanah ibn Nuaym, from Abu Barzah, that Julaybib was from the Ansar, and the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) had the custom that if one of them had an unmarried woman, he would not marry her off until he knew whether the Prophet (peace be upon him) wanted her or not. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said one day to a man from the Ansar: 'Give me your daughter in marriage.' He said: 'Yes, gladly.' He said: 'I do not want her for myself.' The man said: 'Then for whom?' He said: 'For Julaybib.' The man said: 'Let me consult her mother.' He went to her and said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is proposing for your daughter.' She said: 'Yes, gladly — marry her to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).' He said: 'He does not want her for himself.' She said: 'Then for whom?' He said: 'For Julaybib.' She said: 'What! Julaybib?! No, by Allah, I will not marry Julaybib!' When her father stood up to go to the Prophet (peace be upon him), the girl said to her mother from behind the curtain: 'Who proposed for me?' She said: 'The Prophet (peace be upon him).' She said: 'And you reject the Prophet's command?! Hand me over to the Prophet (peace be upon him), for he will not ruin me.' So her father went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: 'She is yours.' So he married her to Julaybib. While the Prophet (peace be upon him) was on an expedition, and Allah, Blessed and Exalted, granted him victory, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Do you miss anyone?' They said: 'We miss so-and-so and so-and-so.' The Prophet said: 'But I miss Julaybib — look for him among the slain.' They looked and found him beside seven whom he had killed, then they killed him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) stood and said: 'He killed seven, then they killed him. He is from me and I am from him.' Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) carried him on his forearms — he had no bier except the forearms of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) — until a grave was dug for him. Then he placed him in his niche, and washing was not mentioned.
