English Translation
Isma'il told us: Ayyub informed us, from al-Qasim al-Tamimi, from Zahdam al-Jarmi, who said: We were with Abu Musa, and he served chicken meat as his food. Among the people was a red-complexioned man from Banu Taym Allah, as if he were a client, and he did not draw near. Abu Musa said to him, "Come close, for I have seen the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, eating from it." He said, "I saw him eating something and found it distasteful, so I swore never to eat it." He said, "Come close, and I will tell you about that. I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with a group of the Ash'aris, seeking mounts from him while he was distributing camels from the camels of charity." Ayyub said: I think he was angry, and he said, "No, by Allah, I will not give you mounts, and I have nothing to give you as mounts." So we left. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was brought plundered camels, and he said, "Where are these Ash'aris?" So we came, and he ordered five milk-camels with white humps for us. We set off, and I said to my companions, "We came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, seeking mounts, and he swore he would not give us mounts, then he sent for us and gave us mounts. I think the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forgot his oath. By Allah, if we take advantage of the Messenger of Allah's forgetting his oath, we will never prosper. Let us go back to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and remind him of his oath." So we returned to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we came to you seeking mounts, and you swore you would not give us mounts, then you gave us mounts; we realized, or thought, that you had forgotten your oath." He, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Go, for it is Allah, Mighty and Majestic, who has given you mounts. And I, by Allah, if Allah wills, whenever I swear an oath and then see something better than it, I do not fail to do what is better and make amends for my oath." Abd al-Razzaq told us: Ma'mar told us, from Ayyub, from Abu Qilaba, from Zahdam al-Jarmi, who said: I was with Abu Musa, and food containing chicken was brought near to him - and he mentioned its meaning. Abdullah b. al-Walid told us: Ayyub told us: Abu Qilaba told me, from a man of Banu Taym Allah called Zahdam, who said: We were with Abu Musa, and chicken meat was brought, and he mentioned it. Affan told us: Wuhayb told us: Ayyub told us, from Abu Qilaba and from al-Qasim al-Tamimi, from Zahdam al-Jarmi, who said: There was a bond of brotherhood between us and al-Ash'ari - and he mentioned the hadith and its meaning.
