حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ أَخْبَرَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الشَّامِيِّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَخْطُبُ يَقُولُ يَا أَهْلَ الشَّامِ حَدَّثَنِي الْأَنْصَارِيُّ قَالَ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ يَعْنِي زَيْدَ بْنَ أَرْقَمَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا تَزَالُ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْ أُمَّتِي عَلَى الْحَقِّ ظَاهِرِينَ وَإِنِّي لَأَرْجُو أَنْ تَكُونُوا هُمْ يَا أَهْلَ الشَّامِ.
English Translation
Sulayman ibn Dawud told us: Shu'bah informed us, from Abu Abdullah al-Shami, who said: I heard Mu'awiyah delivering a sermon, saying: O people of Syria, al-Ansari told me — Shu'bah said, meaning Zayd ibn Arqam — that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: A group of my nation will continue to remain triumphant upon the truth, and I do indeed hope that you will be them, O people of Syria.
