Abdur Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri: The nephew of Abu Ruhm informed me, that he heard Abu Ruhm al-Ghifari - who was one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, those who gave the pledge under the tree - say: I went out with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, on the expedition to Tabuk. When he set off traveling by night, I rode close to him, and drowsiness overcame me, so I kept waking up as my mount drew near to his mount, and its nearness alarmed me for fear that I might strike his foot in the stirrup, so I would hold my mount back - until sleep overpowered me in the middle of the night, and my mount came alongside his mount, with the Prophet's, peace and blessings be upon him, foot in the stirrup, and it struck his foot. I did not wake up except at his saying "Hass" [an exclamation of pain]. I raised my head and said, "Ask forgiveness for me, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Ask [what you will]." He said: Then he began asking me about who had stayed behind among Banu Ghifar, and I would inform him, until he asked me, "What became of the group - the red, tall, curly-haired ones," or he said "the short ones" - Abdur Razzaq was uncertain - "those who have livestock at Shazhiyyat Sharkh?" He said: I thought of them among Banu Ghifar but could not recall them, until I remembered a group from Aslam, so I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what prevents any of those, since they stayed behind, from carrying an active man in the way of Allah upon one of their camels? So summon them" - or is it that one may lag behind the emigrants from Quraysh, the Ansar, Aslam, and Ghifar? Ya'qub narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Salih, [who said]: Ibn Shihab said: The nephew of Abu Ruhm al-Ghifari informed me, that he heard Abu Ruhm - who was one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, those who gave the pledge under the tree - say: I went out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the expedition to Tabuk, and I slept one night at al-Akhsar, and I traveled close to him - and he mentioned the like of the hadith of Ma'mar, except that he said, "I kept holding back my mount until sleep overpowered me during part of the night," and he said, "What became of the group - the black, curly-haired, short ones - those who have livestock at Shazhiyyat Sharkh?" - thinking that they were from Banu Ghifar. Ya'qub narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, and Ibn Shihab mentioned from Ibn Ukayma al-Laythi, from the nephew of Abu Ruhm al-Ghifari, that he heard Abu Ruhm - Kulthum ibn al-Husayn - who was one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, those who gave the pledge under the tree - say: I went out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the expedition to Tabuk - and he mentioned the hadith, except that he said, "I kept holding my mount back from him until sleep overpowered me," and he said, "What became of the group - the black, curly-haired, short ones?" He said: I said, "By Allah, I do not know these among us" - until he said, "Indeed, those who have livestock at Shabakat Sharkh." He said: So I thought of them among Banu Ghifar but could not recall them, until I remembered that they were a group from Aslam who were allies among us. So I said, "O Messenger of Allah, those are a group from Aslam who were our allies."
