حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ حَدَّثَنَا فُضَيْلٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَرْزُوقٍ عَن شَقِيقِ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ عَن الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ قَالَ نَزَلَتْ حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَصَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ فَقَرَأْنَاهَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ أَنْ نَقْرَأَهَا لَمْ يَنْسَخْهَا اللَّهُ فَأَنْزَلَ { حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى } فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ كَانَ مَعَ شَقِيقٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ أَزْهَرُ وَهِيَ صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ قَالَ قَدْ أَخْبَرْتُكَ كَيْفَ نَزَلَتْ وَكَيْفَ نَسَخَهَا اللَّهُ تَعَالَى وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ.
English Translation
Yahya ibn Adam told us, Fudayl - that is, Ibn Marzuq - told us, from Shaqiq ibn Uqbah, from al-Bara' ibn Azib, who said: "Guard the prayers, and the Asr prayer" was revealed, and we recited it in the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, for as long as Allah willed us to recite it; Allah had not abrogated it. Then Allah revealed: "Guard the prayers, and the middle prayer." A man who was with Shaqiq, called Azhar, said to him: "It is the Asr prayer." He said: "I have already told you how it was revealed and how Allah, Exalted is He, abrogated it, and Allah knows best."
