حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ قَالَ رَجُلٌ لِلْبَرَاءِ وَهُوَ يَمْزَحُ مَعَهُ قَدْ فَرَرْتُمْ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنْتُمْ أَصْحَابُهُ قَالَ الْبَرَاءُ إِنِّي لَأَشْهَدُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا فَرَّ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ حُفِرَ الْخَنْدَقُ وَهُوَ يَنْقُلُ مَعَ النَّاسِ التُّرَابَ وَهُوَ يَتَمَثَّلُ كَلِمَةَ ابْنِ رَوَاحَةَ اللَّهُمَّ لَوْلَا أَنْتَ مَا اهْتَدَيْنَا وَلَا تَصَدَّقْنَا وَلَا صَلَّيْنَا فَأَنْزِلَنْ سَكِينَةً عَلَيْنَا وَثَبِّتْ الْأَقْدَامَ إِنْ لَاقَيْنَا فَإِنَّ الْأُلَى قَدْ بَغَوْا عَلَيْنَا وَإِنْ أَرَادُوا فِتْنَةً أَبَيْنَا يَمُدُّ بِهَا صَوْتَهُ.
English Translation
Affan told us: Umar ibn Abi Za'idah told us: I heard Abu Ishaq say: A man said to al-Bara', joking with him, "You fled from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while you were his companions?" Al-Bara' said, "I bear witness concerning the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that he did not flee that day, and I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the day the trench was dug, carrying earth along with the people, reciting the words of Ibn Rawahah: 'O Allah, were it not for You, we would not have been guided, nor given charity, nor prayed. So send down tranquility upon us, and make our feet firm when we meet [the enemy], for indeed the aggressors have transgressed against us, and if they desire to cause discord, we refuse'—raising his voice with it."
