English Translation

Sufyan told us, from Mujalid, from al-Sha'bi, who heard it from al-Nu'man b. Bashir: I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say: "The likeness of the one who compromises and the one who falls into the limits of Allah" - Sufyan said once: "the one who observes the limits of Allah" - "is that of three men who boarded a ship, and one of them got its lower part, its roughest and worst part. He kept going back and forth, and it became burdensome for him each time he passed by, so he said, 'Let me make a hole that will be easier for me and will not require me to pass by them.' Some of them said, 'He is only making the hole in his own portion.' Others said, 'No - if they take hold of his hands he will be saved and they will be saved, but if they leave him, he will perish and they will perish.'"
