حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ سَالِمَ بْنَ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ ابْنِ لَبِيدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ هَذَا أَوَانُ ذَهَابِ الْعِلْمِ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ أَوْ قَالَ هَذَا أَوَانُ انْقِطَاعِ الْعِلْمِ فَقُلْتُ وَكَيْفَ وَفِينَا كِتَابُ اللَّهِ نُعَلِّمُهُ أَبْنَاءَنَا وَيُعَلِّمُهُ أَبْنَاؤُنَا أَبْنَاءَهُمْ قَالَ ثَكِلَتْكَ أُمُّكَ ابْنَ لَبِيدٍ مَا كُنْتُ أَحْسَبُكَ إِلَّا مِنْ أَعْقَلِ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ أَلَيْسَ الْيَهُودُ وَالنَّصَارَى فِيهِمْ كِتَابُ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى قَالَ شُعْبَةُ أَوْ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ الْيَهُودُ وَالنَّصَارَى فِيهِمْ التَّوْرَاةُ وَالْإِنْجِيلُ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنْتَفِعُوا مِنْهُ بِشَيْءٍ أَوْ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ الْيَهُودُ وَالنَّصَارَى أَوْ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ شُعْبَةُ يَقُولُ ذَلِك فِيهِمْ كِتَابُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ.
English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us: Shu'bah narrated to us, from Amr ibn Murrah, who said: I heard Salim ibn Abi al-Ja'd narrate, from Ibn Labid al-Ansari, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'This is the time when knowledge will depart' — Shu'bah said: or he said, 'This is the time when knowledge will be cut off.' I said: 'How can that be, when among us is the Book of Allah, which we teach to our children, and our children teach it to their children?' He said: 'May your mother be bereft of you, O son of Labid! I did not think you were anything but one of the most intelligent people of Madinah. Do not the Jews and the Christians have among them the Book of Allah, the Exalted?' Shu'bah said: or he said, 'Do not the Jews and the Christians have among them the Torah and the Gospel, yet they benefit nothing from them?' or he said, 'Are not the Jews and the Christians, or the People of the Book' — Shu'bah says this — 'that among them is the Book of Allah, Mighty and Sublime?'
