حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ عَن سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدٍ أَنَّ مُطَرِّفًا رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي عَامِرِ بْنِ صَعْصَعَةَ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ أَبِي الْعَاصِ الثَّقَفِيَّ دَعَا لَهُ بِلَبَنٍ لِيَسْقِيَهُ قَالَ مُطَرِّفٌ إِنِّي صَائِمٌ فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ الصِّيَامُ جُنَّةٌ مِنْ النَّارِ كَجُنَّةِ أَحَدِكُمْ مِنْ الْقِتَالِ وَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ صِيَامٌ حَسَنٌ ثَلَاثَةُ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ الشَّهْرِ.
English Translation
Hashim narrated to us, saying: Layth narrated to us: Yazid ibn Abi Habib narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Abi Hind, that Mutarrif, a man of Banu Amir ibn Sa'sa'ah, told him that Uthman ibn Abi al-'As al-Thaqafi called for milk to be brought to give him to drink. Mutarrif said: 'I am fasting.' Uthman said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: "Fasting is a shield from the Fire, like the shield one of you uses in battle." And I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: "Good fasting is three days out of the month."'
