حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ خُبَيْبِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ أَبِي الْهُذَيْلِ قَالَ كَانَ عَمْرُو بْنُ الْعَاصِ يَتَخَوَّلُنَا فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ وَائِلٍ لَئِنْ لَمْ تَنْتَهِ قُرَيْشٌ لَيَضَعَنَّ اللَّهُ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ فِي جُمْهُورٍ مِنْ جَمَاهِيرِ الْعَرَبِ سِوَاهُمْ فَقَالَ عَمْرُو بْنُ الْعَاصِ كَذَبْتَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ قُرَيْشٌ وُلَاةُ النَّاسِ فِي الْخَيْرِ وَالشَّرِّ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ.
English Translation
Muhammad b. Ja'far told us, he said: Shu'ba told us, from Khubayb b. al-Zubayr, who said: I heard 'Abdullah b. Abi al-Hudhayl say: "'Amr b. al-'As used to visit us from time to time, and a man from Bakr b. Wa'il said: 'If Quraysh do not desist, Allah will indeed place this affair in a multitude of the multitudes of the Arabs other than them.' So 'Amr b. al-'As said: 'You have lied. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Quraysh are the rulers of the people, in good and in evil, until the Day of Resurrection.'"
