قَالَ ثُمَّ مَرَّ بِنَا يَوْمًا آخَرَ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ كَلِمَةً تَنْفَعُنَا وَلَا تَضُرُّكَ فَقَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نِعْمَ الرَّجُلُ خُرَيْمٌ الْأَسَدِيُّ لَوْلَا طُولُ جُمَّتِهِ وَإِسْبَالُ إِزَارِهِ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ خُرَيْمًا فَجَعَلَ يَأْخُذُ شَفْرَةً يَقْطَعُ بِهَا شَعَرَهُ إِلَى أَنْصَافِ أُذُنَيْهِ وَرَفَعَ إِزَارَهُ إِلَى أَنْصَافِ سَاقَيْهِ قَالَ فَأَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي قَالَ دَخَلْتُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ عَلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ فَإِذَا عِنْدَهُ شَيْخٌ جُمَّتُهُ فَوْقَ أُذُنَيْهِ وَرِدَاؤُهُ إِلَى سَاقَيْهِ فَسَأَلْتُ عَنْهُ فَقَالُوا هَذَا خُرَيْمٌ الْأَسَدِيُّ.
English Translation
He said: Then he passed by us another day, and Abu al-Darda' said to him: A word that will benefit us and not harm you. He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: What an excellent man is Khurayam al-Asadi, were it not for the length of his hair and the trailing of his lower garment. This reached Khurayam, so he took a blade and cut his hair up to the middle of his ears, and raised his lower garment to the middle of his shins. He said: My father told me: I later went in to see Mu'awiyah, and there with him was an old man whose hair was above his ears and whose garment reached to his shins. I asked about him, and they said: This is Khurayam al-Asadi.
