حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مَعْبَدٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَكَانَ قَلِيلَ الْحَدِيثِ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَكَانَ قَلَّمَا خَطَبَ إِلَّا ذَكَرَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ فِي خُطْبَتِهِ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ حُلْوٌ خَضِرٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِحَقِّهِ بَارِكَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ يُرِدْ اللَّهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُفَقِّهُّ فِي الدِّينِ وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْمَدْحَ فَإِنَّهُ الذَّبْحُ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ قَالَ فِيهِ وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالتَّمَادُحَ فَإِنَّهُ الذَّبْحُ.
English Translation
Yazid said: Ibrahim ibn Sa'd informed us from his father from Ma'bad al-Juhani, who said: I heard Mu'awiya - and he related little from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he rarely delivered a sermon without mentioning this hadith in it - say: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: This wealth is sweet and green (alluring); whoever takes it by its right, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, blesses it for him; and whoever Allah wishes good for, He grants him understanding of the religion. And beware of excessive praise, for it is slaughter.' Ya'qub narrated to us, saying in it: 'And beware of mutual excessive praise, for it is slaughter.'
