English Translation
'Abdullah narrated to us: Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to me, he said: Ma'di ibn Sulayman narrated to us, he said: Shu'ayth ibn Mutayyar narrated to us, from his father Mutayyar -- and Mutayyar was present, confirming his son's account -- he said: "How did I tell you?" Shu'ayth said: "O father, you told me that Dhu al-Yadayn met you at Dhu Khushub, and told you that the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, led them in one of the two afternoon prayers, that is, the 'Asr, and he prayed two rak'ahs and the people, in haste, went out, saying: 'Has the prayer been shortened?' Then the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, stood up, and Abu Bakr and 'Umar, may God be pleased with them both, followed him, being hesitant, and Dhu al-Yadayn caught up with him and said: 'O Messenger of God, has the prayer been shortened, or have you forgotten?' He said: 'It has not been shortened, and I have not forgotten.' Then he turned to Abu Bakr and 'Umar, may God be pleased with them both, and said: 'What does Dhu al-Yadayn say?' They said: 'He has spoken the truth, O Messenger of God.' So the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, went back, and the people returned, and he prayed two rak'ahs, then gave the salutation, then performed the two prostrations of forgetfulness." Abu Sulayman said: I narrated this for six or seven years, then said he gave the salutation, and I am uncertain about it, though it is the greater part of what I recall.
