قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُجَاهِدًا يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِي عَيَّاشٍ الزُّرَقِيِّ قَالَ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ كَتَبَ بِهِ إِلَيَّ وَقَرَأْتُهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَمِعْتُهُ مِنْهُ يُحَدِّثُ بِهِ وَلَكِنِّي حَفِظْتُهُ مِنْ الْكِتَابِ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ فِي مَصَافِّ الْعَدُوِّ بِعُسْفَانَ وَعَلَى الْمُشْرِكِينَ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الظُّهْرَ ثُمَّ قَالَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ إِنَّ لَهُمْ صَلَاةً بَعْدَ هَذِهِ هِيَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْهِمْ مِنْ أَبْنَائِهِمْ وَأَمْوَالِهِمْ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْعَصْرَ فَصَفَّهُمْ صَفَّيْنِ خَلْفَهُ قَالَ فَرَكَعَ بِهِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَمِيعًا فَلَمَّا رَفَعُوا رُءُوسَهُمْ سَجَدَ الصَّفُّ الَّذِي يَلِيهِ وَقَامَ الْآخَرُونَ فَلَمَّا رَفَعُوا رُءُوسَهُمْ سَجَدَ الصَّفُّ الْمُؤَخَّرُ لِرُكُوعِهِمْ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ ثُمَّ تَأَخَّرَ الصَّفُّ الْمُقَدَّمُ وَتَقَدَّمَ الصَّفُّ الْمُؤَخَّرُ فَقَامَ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمْ فِي مَقَامِ صَاحِبِهِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ بِهِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَمِيعًا فَلَمَّا رَفَعُوا رُءُوسَهُمْ مِنْ الرُّكُوعِ سَجَدَ الصَّفُّ الَّذِي يَلِيهِ وَقَامَ الْآخَرُونَ ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ.
English Translation
He said: Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us: Shu'bah told us, from Mansur, who said: I heard Mujahid narrating from Abu Ayyash al-Zuraqi -- Shu'bah said: He wrote it to me, and I read it to him, and I heard him narrating it, but I memorized it from the written text -- that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was in the battle lines facing the enemy at 'Usfan, with Khalid ibn al-Walid commanding the polytheists. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, led them in the noon prayer. Then the polytheists said: They have a prayer after this one that is dearer to them than their children and their wealth. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, led them in the afternoon prayer, arranging them in two rows behind him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, bowed with all of them together; when they raised their heads, the row nearest him prostrated while the others remained standing; when they raised their heads, the rear row prostrated for the bowing they had performed with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Then the front row moved back and the rear row moved forward, each of them standing in the place of his companion. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, bowed with all of them together; when they raised their heads from the bowing, the row nearest him prostrated while the others remained standing. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gave the greeting of peace to them.
