English Translation
He said: Abu al-Nadr narrated to us, who said: 'Ikrimah narrated to us, who said: Iyas ibn Salamah narrated to me, who said: My father informed me, who said: On the day of Khaybar, my uncle fought Marhab the Jew in single combat. Marhab said: "Khaybar knows well that I am Marhab, armed and equipped, a tried warrior, when wars flare up." My uncle 'Amir said: "Khaybar knows well that I am 'Amir, armed and equipped, an adventurous warrior." They exchanged two blows, and Marhab's sword struck 'Amir's shield and glanced off, but the sword recoiled onto 'Amir's own leg, severing his artery, and he died from it. Salamah ibn al-Akwa' said: I met some of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and they said: "'Amir's deed has been nullified; he killed himself." Salamah said: So I went to the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, weeping, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, 'Amir's deed has been nullified." He said: "Who said that?" I said: "Some people among your Companions." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever said that lies; rather, he has his reward twice over. When he went out to Khaybar, he began chanting verse to the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him - and among them was the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, driving the mounts - saying: 'By Allah, were it not for Allah we would not have been guided, nor given charity, nor prayed; indeed those who have transgressed against us, if they seek to cause discord, we refuse; and we are not without need of Your favor; so make firm our feet if we meet [the enemy], and send down tranquility upon us.'" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Who is this?" He said: "'Amir, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "May your Lord forgive you." He said: He never sought forgiveness specifically for a person except that person was martyred. When 'Umar ibn al-Khattab heard that, he said: "O Messenger of Allah, if only you had let us enjoy 'Amir longer." He advanced and was martyred. Salamah said: Then the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent me to 'Ali and said: "I shall surely give the banner today to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger" - or "whom Allah and His Messenger love." He said: So I brought him, leading him, while he had inflamed eyes, and the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, spat in his eye, then gave him the banner. Marhab came out brandishing his sword, saying: "Khaybar knows well that I am Marhab, armed and equipped, a tried warrior, when wars flare up." 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah ennoble his face, said: "I am the one my mother named Haydarah, like the lion of the thickets, fearsome in appearance; I repay them in full measure." Then he split Marhab's head with the sword, and the victory was achieved at his hands.
