English Translation
He said: Ya'qub narrated to us, who said: my father informed us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Muhammad ibn Muslim al-Zuhri mentioned, from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, from 'Abdullah ibn Zayd ibn 'Abd Rabbih, who said: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, resolved to strike the wooden clapper to gather the people for prayer - while disliking it because of its resemblance to the Christians - someone came around me at night while I was asleep: a man wearing two green garments, carrying a clapper in his hand. I said to him: "O servant of Allah, will you sell the clapper?" He said: "What will you do with it?" I said: "We call to prayer with it." He said: "Shall I not show you something better than that?" I said: "Yes indeed." He said: "You say: Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest; I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; come to prayer, come to prayer; come to success, come to success; Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest; there is no god but Allah." He said: Then I stepped back a little, then he said: "Then you say, when you establish the prayer: Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest; I bear witness that there is no god but Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; come to prayer, come to success; the prayer has begun, the prayer has begun; Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest; there is no god but Allah." He said: When morning came, I went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and told him what I had seen. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "This is indeed a true vision, if Allah wills." Then he ordered the call to prayer, and Bilal, the freed slave of Abu Bakr, called the adhan with it and called the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to prayer. He said: He came and called him one morning to the dawn prayer, and it was said to him: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, is asleep." So Bilal cried out at the top of his voice: "Prayer is better than sleep." Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab said: So this phrase was included in the call to the dawn prayer.
