قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَوْسًا يَقُولُ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي وَفْدِ ثَقِيفٍ فَكُنَّا فِي قُبَّةٍ فَقَامَ مَنْ كَانَ فِيهَا غَيْرِي وَغَيْرَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ فَسَارَّهُ فَقَالَ اذْهَبْ فَاقْتُلْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ قَالَ بَلَى وَلَكِنَّهُ يَقُولُهَا تَعَوُّذًا فَقَالَ رُدَّهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أُقَاتِلَ النَّاسَ حَتَّى يَقُولُوا لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ فَإِذَا قَالُوهَا حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيَّ دِمَاؤُهُمْ وَأَمْوَالُهُمْ إِلَّا بِحَقِّهَا فَقُلْتُ لِشُعْبَةَ أَلَيْسَ فِي الْحَدِيثِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ أَظُنُّهَا مَعَهَا وَمَا أَدْرِي.
English Translation
He said, Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us, he said: Shu'ba told us, from al-Nu'man, who said: I heard Aws say: I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, with the delegation of Thaqif. We were in a tent, and everyone who was in it stood up except me and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Then a man came and whispered to him, and he said, 'Go and kill him.' Then he said, 'Does he not testify that there is no god but Allah?' The man said, 'Yes, but he only says it seeking protection.' So he said, 'Bring him back.' Then he said, 'I have been commanded to fight the people until they say there is no god but Allah; and when they say it, their blood and their wealth are forbidden to me except by its right.' I said to Shu'ba: Is it not in the hadith that he then said, 'Does he not testify that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah?' Shu'ba said: I think it is included with it, but I am not certain.
