English Translation
Yahya b. Adam narrated to us: Ma'ruf — that is Ibn Wasil — narrated to us: Hafsah bint Talq, a woman of the tribe, narrated to me in the year ninety, from Abu Umayrah, who said: We were sitting one day with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when a man came with a tray of dates upon it. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "What is this — charity or a gift?" He said, "Charity." He said, "Then give it to the people." Hasan, the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, was rolling in the dust before him. The boy took a date and put it in his mouth, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, put his finger in the boy's mouth and removed the date and threw it away, then said, "We, the family of Muhammad, are not permitted to eat charity." I said to Ma'ruf, "Was Abu Umayr your grandfather?" He said, "My father's grandfather." Hasan b. Musa narrated to us: Ma'ruf narrated to us, from Hafsah bint Talq, from Abu Umayrah Usayd b. Malik, grandfather of Ma'ruf, who said: We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he related the same.
