حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ حَدَّثَنَا ثَابِتٌ يَعْنِي أَبَا زَيْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا هِلَالٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ خَبَّابٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ عَنْ مَوْلَاهُ أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّهُ كَانَ فِيمَنْ يَبْنِي الْكَعْبَةَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ قَالَ وَلِي حَجَرٌ أَنَا نَحَتُّهُ بِيَدَيَّ أَعْبُدُهُ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى فَأَجِيءُ بِاللَّبَنِ الْخَاثِرِ الَّذِي أَنْفَسُهُ عَلَى نَفْسِي فَأَصُبُّهُ عَلَيْهِ فَيَجِيءُ الْكَلْبُ فَيَلْحَسُهُ ثُمَّ يَشْغَرُ فَيَبُولُ فَبَنَيْنَا حَتَّى بَلَغْنَا مَوْضِعَ الْحَجَرِ وَمَا يَرَى الْحَجَرَ أَحَدٌ فَإِذَا هُوَ وَسْطَ حِجَارَتِنَا مِثْلَ رَأْسِ الرَّجُلِ يَكَادُ يَتَرَاءَى مِنْهُ وَجْهُ الرَّجُلِ فَقَالَ بَطْنٌ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ نَحْنُ نَضَعُهُ وَقَالَ آخَرُونَ نَحْنُ نَضَعُهُ فَقَالُوا اجْعَلُوا بَيْنَكُمْ حَكَمًا قَالُوا أَوَّلَ رَجُلٍ يَطْلُعُ مِنْ الْفَجِّ فَجَاءَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالُوا أَتَاكُمْ الْأَمِينُ فَقَالُوا لَهُ فَوَضَعَهُ فِي ثَوْبٍ ثُمَّ دَعَا بُطُونَهُمْ فَأَخَذُوا بِنَوَاحِيهِ مَعَهُ فَوَضَعَهُ هُوَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.
English Translation
The freed slave of Mujahid narrated that he was among those who built the Ka'bah in the pre-Islamic era. He said: 'I had a stone that I carved with my own hands and used to worship it instead of Allah. I would bring thick yogurt that I valued for myself and pour it on the stone, then a dog would come and lick it, then lift its leg and urinate on it. We kept building until we reached the place of the Black Stone, and no one could see the Stone. Then it appeared in the midst of our stones, like the size of a man's head, almost reflecting a man's face. One clan of Quraysh said: We will place it. Others said: We will place it. They said: Appoint an arbitrator between you. They said: The first man to come through the pass. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) came, and they said: The Trustworthy One has come to you. They told him, so he placed it in a garment, then called the clans and they took hold of its edges with him, and he placed it himself (peace be upon him).'
