English Translation
Rawh ibn Ubadah told us, Ibn Jurayj told us, and Muhammad ibn Bakr told us: Ibn Jurayj informed us, he said: Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd al-Malik ibn Abi Mahdhurah informed me, that Abdullah ibn Muhayriz informed him — and he was an orphan under the guardianship of Abu Mahdhurah, Rawh said 'Ibn Mi'yar' and Ibn Bakr did not say it — when he equipped him to go to Syria. He said: I said to Abu Mahdhurah, "O uncle, I am going out to Syria and I fear I will be asked about your call to prayer." So he informed me that Abu Mahdhurah said to him: "Yes; I went out among a group, and we were on part of the road to Hunayn, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was returning from Hunayn, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, met us on part of the road. The muezzin of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gave the call to prayer in the presence of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and we heard the muezzin's voice while we were off to one side, and we shouted, mimicking him and mocking him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, heard the voice, and sent for us until we stood before him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, 'Which of you is it whose voice I heard raised?' And the people all pointed to me, and they told the truth. So he released all of them and detained me, and said, 'Stand and give the call to prayer.' So I stood up, with nothing more hateful to me than the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and nothing more hateful to me than what he was commanding me to do. So I stood before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, dictated the call to prayer to me himself, saying, 'Say: Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest; I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.' Then he said to me, 'Go back and draw out your voice.' Then he said, 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; hasten to prayer, hasten to prayer; hasten to success, hasten to success; Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest; there is no god but Allah.' Then he called me when I had finished the call, and gave me a purse containing some silver. Then he placed his hand on the forelock of Abu Mahdhurah, then passed it over his face twice, then twice over his hands, then over his chest, until the hand of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, reached the navel of Abu Mahdhurah. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, 'May Allah bless you.' So I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, command me to give the call to prayer in Mecca.' He said, 'I have already commanded you to do so.' And all the aversion that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had inspired in me vanished, and it turned into love for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. So I came to Attab ibn Usayd, the governor of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in Mecca, and I gave the call to prayer along with him by the command of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him." He said: And this was told to me by those of my family whom I met who had met Abu Mahdhurah, in accordance with what Abdullah ibn Muhayriz informed me.
