English Translation
Abd al-Razzaq told us: Ibn Jurayj informed me: Uthman ibn al-Sa'ib, their freedman, told me, from his father al-Sa'ib, the freedman of Abu Mahdhurah, and from Umm Abd al-Malik ibn Abi Mahdhurah, that both of them heard it from Abu Mahdhurah. Abu Mahdhurah said: I went out among ten young men with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him — and he was the most hateful of people to us — and the Muslims gave the call to prayer, so we stood up giving the call to prayer, mocking them. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Bring me these young men." Then he said, "Give the call to prayer." So they gave the call, and I was one of them. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Yes, this is the one whose voice I heard; go and give the call to prayer for the people of Mecca." Then he wiped his forelock and said, "Say: Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest; I bear witness that there is no god but Allah — twice; and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah — twice. Then go back and say: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah — twice; and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah — twice; hasten to prayer, hasten to prayer; hasten to success, hasten to success — twice; Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest; there is no god but Allah. And when you give the first call of the dawn prayer, say: Prayer is better than sleep, prayer is better than sleep. And when you give the iqamah, say it twice: prayer has begun, prayer has begun. Have you heard?" He said: And Abu Mahdhurah never cut his forelock nor parted it, because the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had wiped it. Muhammad ibn Bakr told us: Ibn Jurayj informed us, he said: Uthman ibn al-Sa'ib informed me, from Umm Abd al-Malik ibn Abi Mahdhurah, from Abu Mahdhurah, who said: When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, returned from Hunayn, I went out as the tenth of ten — and he mentioned the hadith, except that he said "Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest" twice only, and Rawh also said "twice."
