Yazid ibn Harun told us: Muhammad ibn Amr informed us, from Abu Salamah, who said: Nafi ibn Abd al-Harith said: I went out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, until he entered a walled garden, and he said to me, "Guard the gate for me." Then he came and sat on the rim of the well and let his legs hang down into it. Then there was a knock at the gate. I said, "Who is this?" He said, "Abu Bakr." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, this is Abu Bakr." He said, "Let him in, and give him glad tidings of Paradise." He said: So I let him in and gave him glad tidings of Paradise. He said: So he entered and sat with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the rim, letting his legs hang down into the well. Then there was a knock at the gate. I said, "Who is this?" He said, "Umar." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, this is Umar." He said, "Let him in, and give him glad tidings of Paradise." He said: So I let him in and gave him glad tidings of Paradise. He said: So he entered and sat with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the rim, letting his legs hang down into the well. He said: Then there was a knock at the gate. I said, "Who is this?" He said, "Uthman." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, this is Uthman." He said, "Let him in, and give him glad tidings of Paradise, along with a trial that will befall him." So I let him in and gave him glad tidings of Paradise, and he entered and sat with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the rim, letting his legs hang down into the well.
