حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ عَمْرٍو قَالَ سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي غَزْوَةٍ قَالَ يَرَوْنَ أَنَّهَا غَزْوَةُ بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ فَكَسَعَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ رَجُلًا مِنْ الْأَنْصَارِ فَقَالَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ يَا لَلْأَنْصَارِ وَقَالَ الْمُهَاجِرِيُّ يَا لَلْمُهَاجِرِينَ فَسَمِعَ ذَلِكَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ مَا بَالُ دَعْوَى الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَقِيلَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ كَسَعَ رَجُلًا مِنْ الْأَنْصَارِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَعُوهَا فَإِنَّهَا مُنْتِنَةٌ قَالَ جَابِرٌ وَكَانَ الْمُهَاجِرُونَ حِينَ قَدِمُوا الْمَدِينَةَ أَقَلَّ مِنْ الْأَنْصَارِ ثُمَّ إِنَّ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ كَثُرُوا فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ أُبَيٍّ فَقَالَ فَعَلُوهَا وَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الْأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الْأَذَلَّ فَسَمِعَ ذَلِكَ عُمَرُ فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ دَعْنِي أَضْرِبُ عُنُقَ هَذَا الْمُنَافِقِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَا عُمَرُ دَعْهُ لَا يَتَحَدَّثُ النَّاسُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا يَقْتُلُ أَصْحَابَهُ.
English Translation
Husayn ibn Muhammad told us, Sufyan - meaning Ibn Uyaynah - told us, from Amr, who said: I heard Jabir ibn Abdullah say: "We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on a campaign" - he said they consider it to have been the campaign against Banu al-Mustaliq - "and a man from the Emigrants struck a man from the Helpers on the buttocks. The Ansari man said: 'O Ansar!' and the Emigrant said: 'O Emigrants!' The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, heard that and said: 'What is this call of pre-Islamic days?' It was said: 'A man from the Emigrants struck a man from the Helpers.' The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'Leave it, for it is foul.'" Jabir said: "The Emigrants, when they came to Madinah, were fewer than the Helpers. Then the Emigrants increased in number, and that reached Abdullah ibn Ubayy, who said: 'They have done it! By Allah, if we return to Madinah, the mightier will surely expel the meaner from it.' Umar heard that and went to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, let me strike the neck of this hypocrite.' The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'O Umar, leave him, lest people say that Muhammad kills his companions.'"
