English Translation
Musa told us, Ibn Lahi'ah told us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, that a monk from Syria gave the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, a gift of a cloak of fine silk brocade, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, wore it. Then he went to his house and set it aside, and was informed that a delegation was coming to him. 'Umar ibn al-Khattab urged him to wear the cloak for the arrival of the delegation, but the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "It is not fitting for us to wear it in this world, though it would be fitting for us to wear it in the Hereafter; but take it, O 'Umar." He said, "Do you dislike it for yourself and give it to me?" The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "I am not ordering you to wear it, but rather to send it to the land of Persia so that you may gain wealth by it." But 'Umar refused, so the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sent it to the Negus, who had shown kindness to those of the Companions of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, who had fled to him.
