حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قِرَاءَةً حَدَّثَنِي صَدَقَةُ بْنُ يَسَارٍ عَنْ عَقِيلِ بْنِ جَابِرٍ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي غَزْوَةِ ذَاتِ الرِّقَاعِ فَأُصِيبَتْ امْرَأَةٌ مِنْ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَافِلًا وَجَاءَ زَوْجُهَا وَكَانَ غَائِبًا فَحَلَفَ أَنْ لَا يَنْتَهِيَ حَتَّى يُهْرِيقَ دَمًا فِي أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَخَرَجَ يَتْبَعُ أَثَرَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَنَزَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْزِلًا فَقَالَ مَنْ رَجُلٌ يَكْلَؤُنَا لَيْلَتَنَا هَذِهِ فَانْتَدَبَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَرَجُلٌ مِنْ الْأَنْصَارِ فَقَالَا نَحْنُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَكُونُوا بِفَمِ الشِّعْبِ قَالَ وَكَانُوا نَزَلُوا إِلَى شِعْبٍ مِنْ الْوَادِي فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ الرَّجُلَانِ إِلَى فَمِ الشِّعْبِ قَالَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ لِلْمُهَاجِرِيِّ أَيُّ اللَّيْلِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْكَ أَنْ أَكْفِيَكَهُ أَوَّلَهُ أَوْ آخِرَهُ قَالَ اكْفِنِي أَوَّلَهُ فَاضْطَجَعَ الْمُهَاجِرِيُّ فَنَامَ وَقَامَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ يُصَلِّي وَأَتَى الرَّجُلُ فَلَمَّا رَأَى شَخْصَ الرَّجُلِ عَرَفَ أَنَّهُ رَبِيئَةُ الْقَوْمِ فَرَمَاهُ بِسَهْمٍ فَوَضَعَهُ فِيهِ فَنَزَعَهُ فَوَضَعَهُ وَثَبَتَ قَائِمًا ثُمَّ رَمَاهُ بِسَهْمٍ آخَرَ فَوَضَعَهُ فِيهِ فَنَزَعَهُ فَوَضَعَهُ وَثَبَتَ قَائِمًا ثُمَّ عَادَ لَهُ بِثَالِثٍ فَوَضَعَهُ فِيهِ فَنَزَعَهُ فَوَضَعَهُ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ وَسَجَدَ ثُمَّ أَهَبَّ صَاحِبَهُ فَقَالَ اجْلِسْ فَقَدْ أُوتِيتَ فَوَثَبَ فَلَمَّا رَآهُمَا الرَّجُلُ عَرَفَ أَنْ قَدْ نَذَرُوا بِهِ فَهَرَبَ فَلَمَّا رَأَى الْمُهَاجِرِيُّ مَا بِالْأَنْصَارِيِّ مِنْ الدِّمَاءِ قَالَ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ أَلَا أَهْبَبْتَنِي قَالَ كُنْتُ فِي سُورَةٍ أَقْرَؤُهَا فَلَمْ أُحِبَّ أَنْ أَقْطَعَهَا حَتَّى أُنْفِذَهَا فَلَمَّا تَابَعَ الرَّمْيَ رَكَعْتُ فَأُرِيتُكَ وَايْمُ اللَّهِ لَوْلَا أَنْ أُضَيِّعَ ثَغْرًا أَمَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِحِفْظِهِ لَقَطَعَ نَفْسِي قَبْلَ أَنْ أَقْطَعَهَا أَوْ أُنْفِذَهَا.
English Translation
Ibrahim ibn Ishaq told us, Ibn al-Mubarak told us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq by dictation: Sadaqah ibn Yasar told me, from 'Aqil ibn Jabir, from Jabir ibn 'Abdullah, who said: we went out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in the expedition of Dhat al-Riqa'. A woman of the polytheists was killed. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, set off returning, her husband came - he had been absent - and swore he would not stop until he shed blood among the Companions of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. So he set out following the trail of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stopped to camp, and said, "Who is a man who will guard us this night of ours?" A man of the Muhajirun and a man of the Ansar volunteered, and said, "We will, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Then be at the mouth of the mountain pass." They had camped in a pass of the valley. When the two men went out to the mouth of the pass, the Ansari said to the Muhajir, "Which part of the night would you prefer that I take care of for you - its first part or its last?" He said, "Take care of the first part for me." So the Muhajir lay down and slept, and the Ansari stood up to pray. The man (the enemy) came, and when he saw the shape of the man he knew he was a lookout of the group, so he shot him with an arrow and it struck him; he pulled it out and set it aside and remained standing firm. Then he shot him with another arrow, and it struck him; he pulled it out and set it aside and remained standing firm. Then he shot a third at him, and it struck him; he pulled it out and set it aside; then he bowed and prostrated, then woke his companion, saying, "Sit up, for I have been struck." He leapt up, and when the man saw the two of them, he knew they had become alert to him, so he fled. When the Muhajir saw the blood on the Ansari, he said, "Glory be to Allah! Why did you not wake me?" He said, "I was in a surah I was reciting, and I did not want to break off from it until I finished it. When the shooting continued, I bowed in prayer to alert you. By Allah, had it not been that I would neglect a post the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered me to guard, I would have let my soul be cut off before I broke off or finished it."
